This website is designed as a final project for the Architecture 130 course. The purpose of this course is to look at and analyze the process of design, and to see how the act of designing can affect the outcome of design. Over the semester, the class had been taught to see that there are no concrete and definite solutions to a design problem. Given the same set of context variables, each designer can create unique situations that would be considered as solutions. The fact that individual outcomes can be formed from a single set of rules shows that different design processes will create different outcomes. The focus of the website then is to explore some of the forces that influence and/or form each designers outlook of what design is and how they go about it.
To further explore the nature behind an individual's design process, I have selected 3 architects and their works. With each architect, the challenge will be to not only identify the main arguments behind there work, but to discover the theory behind their stance. Often, the outcome of the design is affected by how a designer feels about certain elements, as well as design aesthetics. Just as important as knowing a designer's arguments is to also review the issues that are important to the designer. Social, artistic, and other contemporary issues are relevant to design because they affect the decisions a designer has to make in regards to variables such as material, layout, and maintenance. Besides issues and arguments, it is also important to notice how a designer draws from precedents to inform his own work. By understanding these forces, perhaps there will be better knowledge of how they form meaning behind each designer's work that dictates how a designer approaches a problem.
